Tata Motors Tata Motors, (formerly The Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company or Telco) was founded in 1945. In the initial years, the company manufactured commercial vehicles in collaboration with Mercedes Benz of Germany. Gradually, the company started producing light commercial vehicles, trucks, multi-utility vehicles, large cars and small cars. JRD Tata’s dream was to turn the truckmaker into an automobile giant. Tata Iron And Steel Company (TISCO) The Tata Group founded India’s first steel company, TISCO in 1907. TISCO was flagship of the Tata Group during JRD Tata’s days. But by 1992, consultants were telling Tata Steel executives that the company was “essentially dead in the water”.22 They felt that the reduced steel tariff by government also resulted in the decline of company’s sales. In addition, the analysts also felt that the company lacked the size, marketing experience and product mix to compete with foreign companies. The slowdown in the global steel industry with the price decline in the world steel market added to the woes of Tata Steel. The company reported 12.43% decline in net profit at Rs 282 crores during the financial year ended 1998-1999 compared with Rs 322 crore in 1997-1998.23 The group, which was dependent on the steel for majority of its profits found itself burdened with the company’s losses...
